The core components of condenser microphone are diaphragm and backplane, which form a parallel plate capacitor, as shown in the picture below.Among them, the diaphragm is flexible, which will displace under the action of acoustic pressure, and the back plate is rigid with perforation design.
Why are there perforations on the back plate?
This is because when the microphone size is small, the air gap between the back plate and the diaphragm will produce film damping, which will limit the frequency response bandwidth of the microphone. Therefore, many acoustic perforations need to be set on the back plate to reduce film damping.
However, the increase of acoustic holes will reduce the stiffness of the back plate and make the back plate "soften".
If the stiffness of the back plate is reduced to the same order of magnitude as the diaphragm, it will seriously affect the performance of the microphone. Therefore, the stiffness of the back plate should be large. You can increase the stiffness of the back plate by thickening the back plate.
